Chapter One, Part One: Fires over Brinestump

Phil

Started writing this before Porter had posted his.  It can take place after Walthus answers Jed, or I can retcon it.

Owen is not able to contain his suspicion.

"Walthus, you live alone here among the goblins.  From what I know of these creatures, it seems staggeringly unlikely that they would have left you in peace."  He looks the halfling in the eye.  "How have you not come to harm?"

TheTick

Walthus backs away from Owen and Jed at the questions, bumping up against the wall.  "Why, I've seen those nasty goblins marching!  Yes, to the north!  Maybe you could catch up to them!"  To Owen: "I can fight, and goblins are stupid.  And in case you haven't noticed, I AM hurt, but a lot of help you were, no help at all!"

S'Vith's eyes slowly open, he looks at the halfling with thinly veiled pity in his eyes, "Calm yourself, you fool.  We come to help, halfing.  Not to harm."  With a sigh uncharacteristic of his race, he pleads, "Forgive my companions.  It has been already a long day's walk, and they treat with regards only to our higher goal.  If there be a way we may help thee, let it be known our group shall do its best."  Glancing at Faraway with a hint of malice in his eyes, "Though the best of some may be greater than that of others."

"If there be more to know and you know it, it would be most easy for us to help if you were to share it with us.  Mayhaps if we break bread as you earlier offered?"

Porteiro

Jed mumbles "How hurt?" in Halfling, trying to obscure the fact that he's asking a question to anybody that doesn't speak Halfling.

Bluff check: This dice roll has been tampered with!
Rolled 1d20+9 : 9 + 9, total 18

He's trying to ascertain whether or not he understands Halfling.

OOC:  Well, Jed is using bluff, so I guess I'm not gonna change to intimidate after all. :)

TheTick

"What's that?  Speak the common language, friend, don't leave anyone out!"

Owen is confused by the exchange with Jed, but now does notice the swamp-halfling's injuries for the first time, having shuffled in last and behind the others.

"Forgive me...  Are you in need of aid?"

He is still suspicious, but does not press the issue yet.

"I tire of our accusations, friends.  What right have we to burst into this halfling's home and begin an interrogation?  Where have the laws of etiquette gone?  Our tongues betray our manners, and our actions betray our hearts.  Let us make merry with this halfing, so that he may trust his thoughts to us.  Halfing. we are but your friends!"

TheTick

As soon as the question about aid is asked, Walthus speaks up, "Well, yes, I was bitten by some snakes, and I think I got some of the poison, anything you can do would be much appreciated."

"I will examine the bite, if you wish. While I do not have it in my power to remove the poison entirely, that you still stand here suggests that its effects are not lethal. Perhaps I may at least be able to bind your wound and begin the healing process."

Porteiro

Jed moves to block the door.  "Faraway and Owen, please grab this gentleman to keep him from escaping. Now.  Something isn't right here."

To the dwarf Owen says.  "No accusations have been made.At least not yet. "Calm yourself.".

When Jed makes his order, Owen replies.  "He is not going anywhere.  Are you Walthus?"  The paladin does move into a more defensive posture.

As Faraway examines the wound, Owen considers Walthus in silence.

Move Action:  Detect Evil (as if three rounds).

Friends, I seriously doubt anything is amiss. Sir, if you would but show me your wounds...

SteveRogers

"For once I agree with Faraway.  I sense nothing amiss at the moment.  Let us tend to the halfing.  Violence need not be necessary.  Neither intimidation.  Not yet at least."

Porteiro

Jed casts Detect Magic, pointed toward the halfling.
