Chapter One, Part One: Fires over Brinestump

"It would be quicker if we could split into a couple of groups to search, but I don't trust this place.  So, I will choose safety over speed and suggest we stay together."

Owen considers whether to share what he saw.  "I believe this shack over here has at least one goblin still in it.  I do not see any reason for us to slay it, granted it does not show aggression towards us.  Our mission here is to end a threat, not to commit genocide.  Bounty or no bounty."

"I sorely wish we had some way to communicate with it, to discover what transpired here.  If we are exceedingly lucky, it may speak the common tongue.  I will address it, stand ready."

Pausing here to allow for agreement or dissent from the group.

Faraway turns toward the building Owen indicates. He loosens his shield a bit, but keeps it over his shoulder. His spear is held in his right hand as a walking stick, but he is prepared to defend himself nonetheless.

Phil

"Hail goblin!  We know you are in there.  Come out peacefully and you will not be harmed."

Owen calls loudly enough to be heard within the shack, but tries not to do so in a way that would carry through the village.  If no one answers, he'll make to enter the premises.  If it does understand common, a diplomacy check (+7) I can make.

There's a pause, and then some rustling around inside the shack.  Some discussion (in goblin) can be heard, and then a goblin leaps out of the window and thuds to the ground in front of Owen, dogslicer in hand.  A second goblin tries the same maneuver in Faraway's direction, but it's foot catches the window sill and it pitches forward into the ground.  It picks it's head up to look at Faraway and starts cackling.  The shack door opens, and a third goblin is standing there, some kind of wooden tube in it's hands.  The near end is lit, and is being aimed (though unsteadily) in the party's direction.

(roll your initiative!  The first goblin is right in front of Owen, the second one square away from Faraway, and the third just behind them (and up 5 ft of ladder))

Faraway doesn't even hesitate. Hefting his spear, he throws it toward the goblin with the smoking tube. Then, whipping out his scimitar and sliding his shield into position, he steps toward the goblin who fell from the window.

(I'm assuming this is a miss)

I didn't roll well for initiative, but unless it moves away from me on its turn I'd imagine this would work.

Porteiro

"Son, you just made a mistake" Jeddy says as he calmly lifts his crossbow to his shoulder and tries to fire at the goblin.  But instead he drops it on his own foot, and the bolt narrowly misses shooting himself.

"And so did I" he says, chagrined.

I rolled a 1 on attack.  :p

The goblin holding the squeals as the spear sails over his head, and then levels the wooden tube at Faraway.  Nothing happens for a moment, so he starts to tilt it up to look in the tube.  A sudden burst of light leaps out, making a loud whistle followed by a POP!  The other two goblins point and laugh at their comrades stupidity.  (he rolled a one)  After Jeddy's crossbow shot goes awry, the other two goblins swing their dogslicers at Faraway and Owen respectively, but miss.

Horcrust is up.  The goblin in front of Faraway is still prone.
