What do you use to make your battle maps? Is it free?

TheTick

So far I've just been taking the maps from the Adventure Path and putting them in Maptool.  Bit of a learning curve, and java sucks, but it's easier than doing all of this by hand.

Is that what Phil uses in his Runelords game, too?

Phil

I use Inkscape, which is more of a drawing tool.  But it works pretty well for this purpose too.  You just import the background map as an image (the maps are provided by Paizo's campaign path), then draw your stuff on top of it with their shape tools.  You can move the objects and stuff around just by dragging them.

I did try Maptool briefly, but the learning curve was too great.  I couldn't figure out how to even get the basics up and working without getting frustrated.  So I am just sticking with Inkscape for now.

I'm muscling through, though I may default to Inkscape for some of the more basic maps.  I really wanted to make use of the fog of war/light-source modeling for this dungeon.

I wish there were big, high quality images of the Red Hand of Doom maps online. I might just have to whip it up freehand.

Also, FYI, I'm running a pbp Pathfinder conversion of Red Hand of Doom over on Myth-weavers. I don't think I can play favorites (maybe I can), but you guys are welcome to apply with characters. Here's the announcement thread.

TheTick

oooh I'd submit but I can't get to Myth Weavers from work.  Though I only work from the office one day a week now...

If Mythweaver wasn't blocked from my worked, I'd be sorely tempted.  Good luck with it!

Damn work! One of the perks of working from home full time, I guess.

Phil

Indeed.  I work from home 2-3 days a week, but it'd drive me nuts to be in a game that I can't check in on every 15 minutes on the days I'm here at the office ;).

There's a handbook for running RHoD on the Giant in the Playground site, very detailed.  Has some bits about switching it up for Pathfinder.

Oh yes, I've read it. I've also read the campaign journal of the guy he gets his Pathfinder ideas from. That finally pushed me over to wanting to play it NOW instead of waiting to see if my face to face group would ever get around to it.

TheTick

I've got a couple of Monk characters kicking around (just wiped the floor with a dude in dueling game, and I've always wanted to play a Wong Fei-Hong style drunken master), or my cross-blooded Elemental/Draconic Sorc could be switched over pretty easily...

OK. In case you can't see it, books are limited to Advanced Player's Guide, Pathfinder Core Rulebook, Ultimate Combat, Ultimate Magic.
