And to be clear, I think Obscuring Mist was a fine spell to cast in this situation. However, Owen and Faraway can't manage to roll above a 9.

Yeah, i'd say it's a great choice, leveled the playing field a bit.  I think you're due for a round where everybody rolls and hits and sprays goblin guts everywhere.  Just hasn't happened yet.

Yeah, there really isn't any way a "target creature" spell could work at a range greater than 5 feet. Maybe a if it were a ranged touch attack. Even then, it would have a 50% miss chance. Unfortunately, Cause Fear doesn't even have that going for it (which is usually a positive, though not in this case). Line of effect would work (something like burning hands), but I don't know that Jeddy has that on his spell list.

Probably want to make a DC 17 Concentration check to avoid 3 attacks of opportunity. It's a +6 for you, I think.

The fireworks are 'Skyrockets' and are worth 50gp each.  They are probably what was being used by the goblins in the attacks on merchant caravans, etc.
