No, per TheTick, as soon as you pulled the lever, they woke up.

SpamHead

Oh. And with my terrible roll, they definitely saw me.

TheTick

Yeah, a rusty metal gate isn't going to open with a quiet whooosh like the doors on the Enterprise. :D
Babies, chum: tiny, dimpled, fleshy mirrors of our us-ness, that we parents hurl into the future, like leathery footballs of hope. And you've got to get a good spiral on that baby, or evil will make an interception!

Not shown on the map, of course, is open ground and then forest you can escape to (would take a full round of movement or thereabouts) if things go sour.  Of course, things may follow you but hey.

What I want to know, does everyone else want me to summon aid?

Lotofsnow

I thought Jeddy or Owen was going to attempt to talk to these things before we start slinging spells and spears. Since whatever you summon only lasts for 2 rounds, it might be wise to hold off.

SpamHead

If they want to talk to them they had better be quick, as the creatures don't look so patient...  ;D

TheTick

You have plenty of options here - though talking wasn't really in the cards.  Still, didn't want to stifle the choice and it's something that would fit Jeddy and Owen to try first.

Faraway remembers a creature called a 'corby' that could fit this description.  Bird-like humanoids that cannot fly, but do like to leap at their prey.  Cave-dwelling, typically.

Crap. I am typically well versed in nearly all monsters (I have 2nd and 4th edition monstrous manuals, even the second for 4th) but I have never heard of a corby.

PS: I just learned how to post from my tablet device and am posting in bed.

TheTick

*kicks dirt* man, couldn't ONE of the corbies have rolled a decent Initiative?

Need Jeddy or S'Vith to get things rolling now that Owen is 'ready'. :D

I'm not entirely sure S'Vith wants to attack, but I'm not sure what my other options would be right now.

TheTick

There's always running away. ;)

Since it seems necessary we gain access to the castle, it seems that isn't a viable option.  If I rolled an Acrobatics skill check, could I just jump/run past them completely?  If nothing else, this could be a tactical advantage if things come to conflict.  Then we'd have the birds surrounded on both sides.
