You know, instead of asking for a rule change, I think I'd be just as happy playing a standard two-handed weapon using Paladin.  Despite all my character building, I haven't actually played many 3.X edition builds, so why not play an iconic one?

Here's the sheet in progress for the greatsword version of Owen.

One of my first OOTS style avatars I've made actually is perfect for him:

Though on this site the dark background kinds of makes him look a little funny :).

I haven't picked out a deity yet.  In standard D&D I am a big fan of Pelor.  I wish there was an equivalent sun-god in Pathfinder, but probably Iomedae is the best fit.

I'll look through the Paladin archetypes to see if anything looks good, but I'm happy with the simplicity of this build, so it'd have to be pretty fetching.

Sounds like Jade Regent might be the way to go.  :D  I'll have to give these concepts/builds a once-over tomorrow.
Babies, chum: tiny, dimpled, fleshy mirrors of our us-ness, that we parents hurl into the future, like leathery footballs of hope. And you've got to get a good spiral on that baby, or evil will make an interception!

Porteiro

Psst!  Now is when y'all give me feedback on what I posted earlier. :p

Phil

I like it a lot Porter.  Sorry I've kind of developed a habit on the GITP forums of only giving cursory glances at others' backstories.  Partially because it makes it more fun to do so when the players are selected, but also partially so the really good ones don't make me feel insecure about my own :).

Your handicap actually plays in perfectly with the "Oracle Curse" feature.  There are a few of them that'd fit with having recovered from a plague.  Wasting for instance.  Lame in particular is well suited to what you were describing about him being crippled.

QuoteOne of your legs is permanently wounded, reducing your base land speed by 10 feet if your base speed is 30 feet or more. If your base speed is less than 30 feet, your speed is reduced by 5 feet. Your speed is never reduced due to encumbrance.

Have you thought any what his "mystery" would be?

Also if we are interested in linking back-stories, it'd be natural for Owen to have been serving or visiting that temple during your stay.

Phil

I'd never read the Jade Regent player's guide before.  I am now totally intrigued.

One thing I wanted to mention, Tick, is that in my campaign I made a conscious decision to make Shalelu part of Ameiko's old adventuring party.  This is non-canon, so didn't want you to be confused in reading the official descriptions here.  I also have some backstory for that group that contradicts what actually happened according to Paizo.  Just FYI.

That you link yourself to one of the NPCs in this campaign is very neat.  Right now I think Owen having a childhood crush on Ameiko would be very fitting.

I didn't realize that you could actually choose one of the four NPCs to make your PC.  It's too bad that my only active Pathfinder character is a female elven ranger, else I'd likely have asked to play Shalelu.

If we do end up going with Jade Regent, I strongly advice the players to check out that guide before getting too invested in your background.

Good call, Phil. I swapped in the trait "Student Survivalist," which makes sense given my class selection and establishes a relationship with Shalelu, one of the key NPCs. I guess Faraway's relationship with her, at 4, is still "Association" though, since he doesn't have a Charisma modifier. Odd that, despite practically raising my character, she is more or less indifferent towards him.

Hmm... Maybe she felt betrayed when I hid the fact that I'd discovered a roc egg from her. I knew she would disapprove, and I figured if I could put the time into training the fledgling after it hatched, she'd have no choice. It all unraveled when Shalelu nearly put an arrow into Neith (the roc) before I was able to shout and shove the ranger to the ground. She still won't talk to me when the bird is around, and even when it isn't, she utters barely a few words here and there. Shalelu won't even give me a chance to prove myself, which is why I've been advising Sheriff Hemlock on his patrol routes.

Updated character sheet: Faraway, the druid

Yeah, I develop characters pretty differently than it seems most of y'all do.  I think of the backstory, and the character, then try to see what class and class features fit best.

For curses, I don't like wasting, because it nerfs his biggest strength -- his charisma.  I'm thinking either  Lame or Clouded Vision.  Or, if I go with the Fire mystery, blackened hands.

For mysteries, so far I like Heavens, Life, Fire, Wind, and Nature (although if we're gonna have a druid, picking nature probably isn't the best idea.

For me, it depends on the character. Sometimes I have a concept and then try to find the rules to fit it. Other times, I just glance at everything out there, and get inspiration.

Phil

I do tend to find builds I want to play, then use the campaign setting and the build to help form the character.  I think both ways have their advantages.

Since I'm probably going with the "Childhood Crush" trait, and so raised in Sandpoint:  I was thinking of making Owen be the son of Wade Deverin, one of the paladin brothers who founded the Two Knights Brewery.  Wade was killed by the serial killer that plagued the town years earlier.  Depending on the timeline for when Jade Regent starts, it would be his uncle Gavin that finished raising him.

He'd then have been sent off to a temple to receive his paladin training, returning to Sandpoint shortly before the campaign begins.  His age would be around that of Ameiko.  I'm guessing she's around 25?

Edit:  This is all assuming we do end up playing Jade Regent.  If we go a different way that's fine too.

TheTick

You guys seem interested in it, and to be honest so am I, so let's go with Jade Regent.

A couple of paragraphs are fine - maybe a bit about your chosen NPC connection, and how you grew up (or for older characters, came to settle in Sandpoint).

If any needs the Jade Regent player's guide, you 'buy' it for free here.

The forum for this game is created, anyone who's posted interest here is in and should have access - just post something up in the test thread there to make sure I did it right. :D

I think maybe a weapon cord would eliminate some of the problems with using Lay on Hands with a sword and board build.

Say its my turn and I am hurt:
1)  (Free) Drop sword, with cord it doesn't go far.
2)  (Swift) Lay on Hands
3)  (Move) Draw sword combined with move.
4)  (Standard)  Attack

If for some reason I can't move:
1)  (Standard)  Attack
2)  (Free) Drop sword, with cord it doesn't go far.
3)  (Swift) Lay on Hands
4)  Beginning of next turn: (Swift) Put sword back in hand.

Lotofsnow

Sounds like a viable plan to me, Phil. Just hope The Tick doesn't cut the cord on you.
