Chapter 3 Day 1 - The Dry Season

Yiki, Bigsby, Taggart and Imfei check their packs one final time as they approach the gate.  Guard Captain Kern walks over and starts shaking hands.  "Good luck out there.  The swamp isn't as much of a swamp as you'd think in the dry season, and if you stick to the animal tracks, you'll do fine."  With that, he steps back and the adventurers walk out of the gate.

The sun rapidly warms the air as the group walks away from Seawell.  There are several paths through the undergrowth, beaten down by wild game animals, and the team follows one in the direction of the lighthouse.  The landscape is mostly flat, with tall grasses and large stands of trees in equal measure.  Periodically, they pass a solution hole, where water has filled in a shallow, murky pool.

In the interest of saving time, roll 4 spot checks for me (1d20+ whatever your spot rank is on your sheet).
Babies, chum: tiny, dimpled, fleshy mirrors of our us-ness, that we parents hurl into the future, like leathery footballs of hope. And you've got to get a good spiral on that baby, or evil will make an interception!

Dry season, Yiki says to the bard and paladin behind him, after that weather we had on the way up, I'd hate to see their wet season.

Having a hard time avoiding the various holes in the swamp, Bigsby chuckles, "I could stand for it to be a bit more dry.  That be the truth of the thing."  Calling behind him in elf, "How go things on your end, elf?"

Mumbling, "I'd play us a tune to lighten spirits if I could avoid tripping in these blast puddles."

The first few hours of the trip pass uneventfully.  Yiki hacks through what little vegetation gets in the way, and the adventurers make good time.  Nearing midday, Yiki calls a sudden halt.  About 10 feet away, there is what appears to the rest of the team to be a thick log across the path...until it starts slithering towards the Half-Orc!

I rolled the checks for Taggart and Imfei, no help.  Need initiative and what you want to do.

The writhing snake makes a difficult target, especially when trying NOT to skewer a friend.  Bigsby's thrust misses the mark, skidding off the tough scales. (miss)
