Section 5 - Narrow Hallways Are Never Dangerous

Previous topic - Next topic

TheTick

Taggart leads the way down the dank, narrow hall to the East.  The dim light from the shaft in the room left behind fades, and without thinking of it, the adventurers slow their pace.  At the end of this hallway is a small chamber whose wooden door lies on the floor.  The smell of dust pervades the air, and the sound of thunder is muted here.  Numerous body-shaped lumps are visible through the doorway, each wrapped carefully in layers of grey thread like woven mummies.

As they approach the door, both Yiki and Zedric whisper 'Wait!' just before Taggart steps into a web, barely visible, covering the door opening.

Pausing here.  You can roll a spot check to see what's around, and the web will need to be destroyed before you can enter the room (spider silk, even if old, is quite resilient).
Babies, chum: tiny, dimpled, fleshy mirrors of our us-ness, that we parents hurl into the future, like leathery footballs of hope. And you've got to get a good spiral on that baby, or evil will make an interception!

Lotofsnow

Perhaps we can burn it out with a torch, suggests the barbarian.

Nighthawk

"If the torch doesn't work, I may be able to clear it..." Zedric stares at the torchbearer and waits patiently.

pooka

Ooh, ah, yes, I guess that would be me.  Imfei wriggles past Taggart and holds her torch up to the web.

[DM]We'll switch up positions like so (see attached image).  Anyone want to do anything else before clearing the web?[/DM]

Imfei carefully dips the burning end of her torch into the web, and nods with satisfaction as it begins to burn away.  The satisfaction is short-lived, however, as a jet of thick, sticky webbing hits the Elf in the chest and legs.  The largest spider you've seen in your short adventuring careers has dropped from the ceiling and is quickly incapacitating Imfei.

Roll for initiative!  The spider got the drop on you and got to act first.  Imfei, you are entangled.  An entangled creature takes a -2 penalty on attack rolls and a -4 penalty on Dexterity, can move at only half speed, and cannot charge or run.  You can take a full-round action to either try and break the web (based on a strength check) or you can use the Escape Artist skill (which you haven't invested in, and is hampered by your armor) to try and escape.  Someone could also cut it off you, but they'd be ignoring the man-sized spider standing 5 feet away. ;)

Initiative Order:
Taggart:  16
Yiki:  14
Imfei:  8
Spider:  7
Zedric:  6

Taggart grabs Imfei by the shoulder, and slips his longsword down just inside most of the web strands, and jerks once.  Most of the webbing falls away, freeing Imfei's arms and legs.  She nods to him once, and turns back towards the spider.

Pausing here for a moment.  Taggart could technically still move but he could not attack, so I'm not sure there's much point.  Would need to know what Yiki and Imfei would do in that case.

Yiki squints, clumsily loads an arrow into his shortbow, and launches it at the spider.

I took the -4 penalty into account with my roll.

Imfei's mace strikes true, with a satisfying 'craaaack' sound. (hit, -4hp) The spider flails a few of it's limbs and lets out a hiss (who knew spiders hissed?).  With surprising speed, the beast jumps up and jabs the Elf with one of it's fangs (hit, -4hp, save vs. poison, success), but after a hasty check of the wound Imfei is fairly certain she didn't get envenomated.
